September 23, 2013

Montreal, September 23, 2013 – The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is donating $1 million to the Université de Montréal (UdeM) as a contribution to the Campus Montréal campaign. The money will go to provide scholarships for university students from Greece to study at the Université de Montréal.

“Thanks to this and other generous donations, our university can count on having outstanding students from different parts of the world, and this both enriches our community and allows these students to obtain a world-class education,” said Dr. Guy Breton, Rector of UdeM. “I wish to thank the Stavros Niarchos Foundation most sincerely for having agreed to create a fund of this size for the Université de Montréal, and we look forward eagerly to welcoming the first students to benefit from these scholarships.”

UdeM offers over 350 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These programs are headed by some of the most highly regarded teachers and researchers in their respective fields, who actively support their students at every stage of their educational path. Recipients of the new scholarships are welcome to apply for admission to any UdeM field of study.

Among those present for the official announcement of the donation at the Université de Montréal were Stelios Vasilakis, Senior Program Officer for Strategy & Initiatives at the Foundation, Robert Peck, Canadian Ambassador to the Republic of Greece and Canadian High Commissioner to the Republic of Cyprus, Orestis-Athanasios Kafopoulos, Consul General of the Republic of Greece in Montreal, John Parisella, Executive Director, Campus Montréal, and numerous members of the university community.
