With the start of the new-school year, it is inspiring to meet a role model, an extraordinary businessman who has made a name for himself through his considerable accomplishments. Geoff Molson, co-chair of Campus Montréal and president and chief executive officer and co-owner of the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens, Evenko and the Bell Centre, is such a person. He recently spoke to Sophie Cousineau, the Globe and Mail’s chief Quebec correspondent. Since Mr. Molson’s impressive credentials as an influential business leader are well established, Campus Montréal has drawn on Ms. Cousineau’s interview to present a different side of the man: as dynamic entrepreneur and father.
Geoff Molson has always been a huge hockey fan, but upon acquiring Evenko, he discovered Montreal’s cultural sector and found a new passion. He admits that he is not a music expert, but his entrepreneurial streak kicked in when an opportunity in the entertainment industry came his way. He jumped at the chance to channel his energy into something new. In her article, Ms. Cousineau wrote: “His interest in the music industry is rooted in what he calls his entrepreneurial spirit. Evenko was a ‘coincidence’ – something that came with the prized hockey team he dreamed of owning since he was a boy. But the Canadiens are a mature business, and this is a chance for Mr. Molson, who has worked for multinationals such as the family-controlled Molson Coors Brewing Co. or The Coca-Cola Co., to build something of his own.”
In addition to being a skilled entrepreneur, Mr. Molson is a family-oriented man with a daughter and three sons. He attends all of his children’s practices and games and specifically chose a car that would carry four hockey bags. His family values go beyond taking care of his loved ones – they are what fuel his entrepreneurial spirit and desire for success. In fact, he explained to Ms. Cousineau how important these values are to him in terms of future generations of the Molson family: “I am from the seventh generation and there is an eighth one, too. I am building a business that hopefully will stay in our family for another generation. And the stronger I make it, the better are the chances.”
Although this profile of Mr. Molson describes him as a dynamic entrepreneur, he is also a devoted father whose family is a huge source of motivation to succeed and excel. As you head back to school, Campus Montréal encourages you to tap into your passions and your values and to pursue your goals throughout the coming year.
