June 4, 2015

The Sisters of Charity of Montreal, better known as the “Grey Nuns,” have announced a significant donation of $1.5 million to Campus Montréal, the major fundraising campaign for HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and the Université de Montréal. This generous gift will provide considerable impetus in financing the Marguerite d’Youville Research Chair in Humanistic Nursing at the Université de Montréal.

The UdeM and Grey Nuns are seeking further donations in an effort to obtain total funding of $5 million for this vital research chair.

“The Sisters of Charity have supported a number of highly-esteemed institutions in Montreal and elsewhere in Quebec,” stated Rector Guy Breton. “This new donation is a fitting tribute to the memory of pioneer Marguerite d’Youville and will serve to keep her humanistic spirit alive. I sincerely thank the Grey Nuns and their representative, Mother Superior Jacqueline Saint-Yves, for this generous donation.”

The research chair will analyze the needs of individuals, families and communities with respect to the healthcare experience, and it will evaluate nursing interventions and develop humanistic strategies that contribute to the quality of care. It will also establish a professional development program to foster greater humanism in the care of individuals, families and communities. Its work will lead to the introduction of initiatives and actions to raise awareness among nurses about the importance of offering humanistic, compassionate care and comfort to help preserve human dignity and promote resilience.
