Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada donates $3.7 million to support research through Campus Montréal

October 7, 2015

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada today announced a $3.7 million donation to the Université de Montréal as part of the overall Campus Montréal fundraising campaign for HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and the Université de Montréal. Over the past 25 years, the Foundation has given a total of $33 million to the Université de Montréal and its related healthcare facilities to support a wide range of research projects into heart disease.

“In recent years, new discoveries and technological tools have led to major breakthroughs with significant advances in the treatment of heart disease as a result,” said Université de Montréal rector Guy Breton. The Foundation’s support has played a vital role in this success and we are very grateful for the continued confidence they have placed in the work of researchers in the UdeM network.”

“Thanks to financial assistance from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, more and more people across Canada are surviving heart attacks and strokes. In fact, the death rate has dropped by more than 75% in the last 60 years, over 40% the last decade alone. We owe much of this success to dedicated researchers, who help the Foundation, among others, in the fight against cardiovascular disease, one of the main causes of death in Canada today,” said Edmée Métivier, CEO of the Foundation in Quebec.

With today’s donation, the UdeM will be able to go ahead with its ongoing research into heart disease to help prevent the disease, save lives and improve recovery.
